The founder and head of the First Moscow Dental School Ilya Matveevich Kovarsky and his role in the development of Russian dentistry

Abstract
The article presents a scientific biography of Ilya Matveevich Kovarsky based on materials from family and state archives. The study reveals key aspects of the life and professional activity of an outstanding figure of Russian dentistry, who played a fundamental role in the formation and development of dental education and science in Russia. I.M. Kovarsky was the founder and constant head of the First Moscow Dental School, which trained more than 2,500 dentists over 27 years.Kovarsky, possessing deep knowledge and pedagogical talent, made an invaluable contribution to the formation of the professional dental community. He was one of the founders and a member of the board of the Moscow Odontological Society and the Russian Dental Union, the editor and publisher of one of the first specialized domestic dental journals, Odontological Review, the organizer of three dental congresses held in the building of the First Moscow Dental School and the International Medical Congress on Odontology held in Moscow. The role of I.M. Kovarsky and the First Moscow Dental School he created in the development of Russian dentistry has been little studied and underestimated, which determines the relevance of the study.
