Assessment of health status of dentists treating children

Abstract
Introduction.Dentists working with children are considered to be professionals moslty exposed to harmful occupational factors, including stress. However the health indicators of these professionals have been insufficiently studied.The aim of this studywas to analyze health status of dentists working with children in public healthcare facilities in St. Petersburg, based on morbidity with temporary disability incidence rates and survey data.Materials and methods.morbidity with temporary disability rates were analyzed using a standard methodology and reports of temporary disability cases over a three-year period. SF-36 quality of life questionnaire and Work Ability Index (WAI) were used for the survey. The analysis included data from a survey of 120 dentists from eight dental clinics (eight men and 112 women, average age 47.2±11.34 years, work experience ranging from 1 to 49 years).Results.The incidence of morbidity with temporary disability among dentists working with children in public healthcare facilities of St. Petersburg was on average 1.2 times higher than similar morbidity rates for the working population in St. Petersburg, amounting to 37.4 cases and 468.2 days per 100 specialists per year. Respiratory diseases predominated, accounting for an average of 89.4%. No cases of occupational injuries or occupational diseases were recorded among the specialists. According to the survey results, the majority of dentists had chronic diseases (77%) and musculoskeletal disorders (72%). The presence of chronic diseases, particularly musculoskeletal disorders, is significantly associated with a decrease in quality of life indicators among dentists working with children. The value of the integral indicator of quality of life was significantly lower in dentists with musculoskeletal diseases than in their absence: 0.384 opposite 0.557 points (p <0.001).Conclusion.Results demonstrate the relevance of analyzing the health status of dentists working with children and the expedience of using, in addition to data on morbidity with temporary disability and occupational morbidity, the results of the SF-36 quality-of-life questionnaire and the WAI.
